Current Conditions:
Flows on the Upper Colorado were sitting around 500 cfs on 6/10, which feels concerningly low for early to mid June. The river was still fishing well, but it is definitely worth keeping an eye on flows as we move further into summer.
We only saw mayflies on the water during the day, but the rocks told a little more of the story. Benny Biot found his first stonefly nymphs, along with caddis larvae crawling out of their cases, which is a great sign for where things are headed as summer bug activity continues to build.
The dry fly bite was clearly there, but fish were not locked into one exact pattern. Smaller mayfly imitations produced, bigger foam bugs got looks and eats, and the dry dropper setup gave us a little flexibility when fish were feeding just below the surface.
The moment of the day came when Benny Biot finally earned his name by catching a fish on his famous biot midge. Months of branding, myth-making, and unreasonable confidence finally paid off. Proof below.
Overall, it was a strong day on the Upper Colorado with steady surface activity, happy fish, and a good mix of mayfly and early terrestrial action. The flows are lower than we would like for this time of year, but for now the river is still producing well if you are thoughtful with your presentations and willing to mix smaller dries with bigger attractor patterns.
