Current Conditions:

Flows on the South Platte in Deckers are sitting at 131 cfs. Conditions looked promising, but the day ended up being on the slower side overall.

We hooked up within the first five minutes of being on the water, which naturally set completely unrealistic expectations for the rest of the day. After that, things slowed down significantly and required a lot more patience to scratch out a few fish.

Bug activity was nearly nonexistent for most of the day. We spent a good amount of time trying to make sense of it, and the best guess is that the combination of lower flows earlier in the week followed by a sudden bump overnight may have disrupted things enough to keep bugs from getting going.

All fish landed came from the Tikka Masala Island stretch, with other sections producing little to no action. Fish that were caught came subsurface, and success depended on staying persistent, fishing thoroughly, and not expecting much in the way of surface activity.

Water clarity remained good, but fish were less willing overall and required more precise presentations.

Flies of the Day:

  • sz20 wang chung

  • sz20 juju baetis

  • sz24 top secret midge

Overall, a slower day with limited bug activity, but still possible to put a few fish in the net with some persistence.
