Current Conditions:
Spring is in full force and it’s helping remind us that this place doesn’t always suck. Flows are currently sitting right around 125 cfs in Deckers, which remains my favorite flow for this stretch. This bump has the river fishing well and fish are starting to spread out more as conditions continue to improve.
We started the day focusing on nymphing deeper pools, where fish were holding early. As things warmed up, fish began to transition into shallower water to feed more actively. By around noon, BWOs started hatching and we saw consistent surface activity build through the rest of the day, with fish rising steadily in softer water and tailouts.
The river is running clear with great visibility, so staying light on your terminal tackle and focusing on clean, natural drifts continues to be key. Longer leaders and lighter tippet will help convert more opportunities, especially with fish feeding higher in the column.
Conditions were not without challenges, as we experienced periods of strong, gusty winds, at times reaching near gale-force intensity, which made presentations more technical throughout the day.
Flies of the Day:
sz24 miracle midge
sz20 juju baetis
sz20 mole fly
sz20 klinkhammer
Overall, a really solid day on the water with improving spring conditions, active fish, and a mix of productive subsurface and dry fly opportunities.
