Current Conditions:
Flows on Boulder Creek were sitting around 31 cfs. The creek is in full spring mode, and it finally feels like we’re settling into proper fishing season.
The weather was great, and fish were eager on both dries and nymphs throughout the day. We had success on a variety of patterns, which made it a good day to move around, experiment, and fish different types of water.
Below the falls, flows were ample and the fishing was productive. Above the falls, however, the water was shockingly low, to a level we had never seen before. They must be holding water in Barker Meadow Reservoir until the town really needs it downstream. For now, staying below the falls is probably the better call, though there were some tidal-looking pools above that did appear to be holding fish.
We flipped a few rocks and found mostly baetis, along with a few small aquatic worms. That lined up well with the fish activity, especially in the smaller pockets and softer seams.
A big takeaway from the day was not to overlook the small stuff. Two out of three of us earned awards for scrappiness, and the anglers who took the time to pick apart every little pocket were rewarded. Don’t walk by every small hole, because there’s a good chance it’s holding fish.
During Benny Biot’s engagement BBQ, the groom was able to snag a celebratory rainbow above the reservoir, a strong showing from the man of the hour and a truly appropriate use of party time.
Water clarity was good, and the creek had a nice spring rhythm to it. Clean drifts still mattered, but fish were willing enough that covering water and staying persistent paid off.
Flies of the Day:
sz18 jig frenchie
sz14 stimulator
sz20 mole fly
sz20 black zebra midge
sz20 lil bit
sz18 black tube midge
Overall, a strong spring day on Boulder Creek with active fish, good weather, and plenty of opportunity for anyone willing to work the smaller pockets carefully.
